Alonso: We must not slow down

Xabi Alonso wants his teammates to maintain their momentum after Real Madrid’s battling 1-0 win at Sporting Gijon.Despite virtually dominating the entire ninety minutes, Real had to wait till eight minutes from time when Argentine hotshot Gonzalo Higuain bundled home the winner. Their 1-0 success ensured that the visitors notched their sixth successive league victory. Speaking to realmadrid.com after the match, Spanish schemer Alonso admitted that he was relieved to see Higuain finally put the ball into the back of the net. Alonso said: "It was a very competitive and intense match. Both sidestried to win from the get-go. We had several chances to score, but goals didn't seem to want to happen. We are happy thanks to Higuain's goal." The former Liverpool midfielder admitted that his opponents gave Real a good run for their money. He commented: "The fast pitch and the good flow of the ball demanded the match to be intense. Both teams wanted to be strong in defence and active in attack. "We knew Sporting wouldn't leave open spaces and that they would pressurise hard. We had a few chances in the first half and one of our goals in the second half was disallowed because of a dubious offside. "We are on the right path and we must stay on it." Nevertheless, Alonso warned that his team are nowhere near the finished product and maintained that Jose Mourinho's charges can go on to reach even greater heights. Alonso added: "We are always under construction because there's always something we can improve on. We also want to perfect the things we do well. We don't want to stop; we are ambitious and want more." Real have now amassed an impressive 29 points from 11 matches.
